Amorphous material transmitting IR (AMTIR) has very low water solubility and good chemical resistance – particularly to acids. It generally performs well in a pH range of 1-9. Although AMTIR contains arsenic and selenium, it is generally considered safe to handle. Coated versions of their AMTIR ATR crystals are available for improved IR throughput and enhanced seal within the ATR crystal plate. |

Germanium (Ge) is a high refractive index material (4.0 @ 10 microns) which provides shallow depth of penetration useful in some ATR applications. It is relatively hard and resistant to most acid and basic samples. The long wavelength cutoff of Ge will limit spectral range for multiple reflection ATR crystals to about 700 cm (depending upon pathlength). Coated versions of our Ge ATR crystals are available for improved IR throughput and enhanced seal within the ATR crystal plate. |

Thallium Bromoiodide (KRS-5) ATR crystals are a medium refractive index material (2.37 @ 10 microns) with excellent long wavelength coverage in the infrared spectral region. It is non-hygroscopic with very good chemical resistance; however, KRS-5 will occasionally exhibit cold flow behavior. KRS-5 is extremely toxic and is absorbed through the skin and should only be handled with glove protection. |

Zinc selenide (ZnSe) is a widely used ATR crystal material and is a relatively hard and brittle material. It is insoluble in water but is attacked by strong acids and bases. ZnSe has a good mid-IR spectral range reaching to about 630 cm-1 for multiple reflection ATR crystals at the long wavelength side of the spectrum (depending upon IR beam pathlength). Coated versions of their ZnSe ATR crystals are available for improved IR throughput and enhanced seal within the ATR crystal plate. |
